A summer's night of sparkly indie pop with Lighthe A summer's night of sparkly indie pop with Lightheaded + Jeanines + special guests.

Carrying on the long tradition of sentimental pop songwriters, U.S.'s Lightheaded @lightheadedband distills decades of jangly, lovelorn tunes into sparkling sounds for modern softies. They have the sunshine sparkle of Margo Guryan, the C86 charm of Dolly Mixture, and the cinematic swell of Belle & Sebastian: a simple case of pure pop for now people.

The band have signed to Skep Wax @skepwax records in the UK to release a new EP, Thinking Dreaming Scheming, their most collaborative and earnest release to date. Expect baroque pop that feels warm and dusty and adding to all the fun are the cameos and contributions from the new generation of New York indie pop goodness.

Jeanines @jeaninesnyc - Alicia Jeanine and Jed Smith - have charted a distinctive course through the history of pop, evoking influences as varied as the 60s folk of early Fairport Convention and Vashti Bunyan, the sunshine pop of Margo Guryan and the post-Black Tambourine projects of Pam Berry.
Their new album, "How Long Can It Last," finds Jeanines combining richly melodic tunes with crisp arrangements and melodies and harmonies which are simply heavenly, elevating these economical songs to give each the feeling of a lost classic.

Eliza Carthy (solo) @elizacarthh + Jennifer Reid @ Eliza Carthy (solo) @elizacarthh + Jennifer Reid @jenniferballadss play @creativefstone #Folkestone on Saturday 21st June.

If there is one musician who embodies the dynamism and vitality of the current English folk revival, it’s Eliza Carthy MBE.

As the daughter of folk legends Martin Carthy and Norma Waterson, Eliza grew up immersed in the world of traditional music and from an early age was championed by John Peel, Andy Kershaw and Billy Bragg.

Beloved of staunch traditionalists and iconoclasts alike, Eliza’s music effortlessly crosses boundaries of genre and style. Whether solo or fronting a big band, performing a centuries-old ballad or a self-written song, her powerful, nuanced voice, fiercely beautiful fiddle-playing, and mesmerizing performances have influenced a whole generation of young musicians.

Twice nominated for the Mercury Prize, and winner of innumerable other accolades over her thirty-year career, Eliza has performed and recorded around the world with a diverse array of artists including, Paul Weller, Rufus and Martha Wainwright, Patrick Wolf, and Jarvis Cocker.

Describing herself simply as a modern English musician, she is one of the most impressive, engaging, and important performers of her generation.

"Unarguably the queen of English Folk" ~ The Observer

Jennifer Reid performs 19th Century Lancashire dialect work songs, Manchester broadside ballads and clog steps. She played Barb in Shane Meadows’ critically acclaimed period drama The Gallows Pole on the BBC. She works across academia, folk performance, heritage consultation and media to bring industrial history back to the people. Think rousing songs and passionate oratory.

Gemma is writing for her second album. 📣 Announcing the Jackie-O Motherfucker Reissue 📣 Announcing the Jackie-O Motherfucker Reissue on Fire Records:
'Flags of the Scared Harp (20th Anniversary Edition)'.

Jackie-O Motherfucker “patiently unravel their source material's tangled threads, respooling them into wondrously evocative yet deeply personalised new devotionals.” ~ Pitchfork.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Jackie-O Motherfucker’s ‘Flags Of The Sacred Harp’, a re-imagining of traditional hymns and anthems from the original American songbook that was first published in 1844, @fire_records releases a double vinyl edition of this much-heralded work.

Jackie-O Motherfucker @jackie_o_motherfucker + special guests also play The Rosehill @the_rose_hill Brighton on Thursday 28th August.

Jackie-O Motherfucker's music draws from a variety of subgenres including various folk musics of the world (American folk and blues, Traditional English folk ballads, etc.), drone, free jazz, psychedelia, and noise rock, and is heavily improvisational in its nature. Because they are a collective, rather than a consistent band or group, the sound of their music can change from performance to performance.

Sekinue is a Brighton based trans, queer musican and presents original alt-folk music lead on the celtic lever harp. Sekinue’s live performances are a heartfelt form of musical intimacy and they have been seen alongside acts such as Moon Panda, Frankie Archer and Saij.

The Rheingans Sisters are one of the most visionary acts on the British folk scene.
After a decade releasing celebrated albums (BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winners of ‘Best Original Track’ 2016 and ‘Best Group’ nominees in 2019) and touring across the world, The Rheingans Sisters release their much anticipated fifth studio album.

The visionary duo's 5th album and new live show is a sonic and aesthetic development of their live work so far, creating an even more immersive musical journey for their audience. 📣 📣 New Show Announcement 📣 📣 All ha 📣 📣 New Show Announcement 📣 📣

All hail the return of Jolie Holland after her sold out show in Brighton!

Jolie Holland is an American singer and performer who combines elements of folk, traditional country, jazz, soul, rock n roll, and blues. Forging a timeless, haunting musical career, Jolie Holland returns to the UK to share her intimate and honest artistry spanning several albums and projects with her new and devoted fans.

Jolie has knotted together a century of American song into a stew that is impossible to categorise. This is her burden and her gift, to know all of these American songs of the last ten decades in her head and her heart, and to have to wrestle with their legacy.

She dives straight to the pathos of a song the way the very greatest singers - singers like Mavis Staples, or Al Green, or Skip James, or Tom Waits do. Upon first encounter her songs seem challenging, perhaps unsettling at times, but as so many poets and rockers have shown us (from Dante Alighieri to William Blake to Sylvia Plath to Patti Smith to Nick Cave to Mark E. Smith) that’s where the beauty lies. As evident on her first recordings, Holland apparently has no fear of the truth, and there is no emotional core that she cannot reach in song. In fact she thrives on the red hot center of a musical composition, in all its strange and brutal detail.

“Noir, lived in, caustic, not entirely of this time” ~ Aquarium Drunkard.

We're thrilled to be making merry with much loved We're thrilled to be making merry with much loved folk trio, the Young’uns, as they celebrate 20 years of singing together.

The Young’uns 20 @theyoungunstrio play Komedia Brighton @komedia_brighton on Wednesday 28th May.

One night in Stockton On Tees, three teenagers heard strange sounds coming from the backroom of a pub. They went in.
They heard people singing songs they’d never heard before. Songs without instruments. Songs in their own accents. Songs about places they knew. Folk songs. They joined in. Because they were the youngest ones there by several decades, they were soon labeled ‘the Young’uns.’

20 years on and they’ve carried their unfortunate name around the world, from Sydney to Vancouver, from Radio Tees to Radio 4, won 3 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and gained a reputation for singing life affirming songs of social conscience in immaculate 3 part harmony.
But as well as their 20th anniversary, Sean Cooney, Michael Hughes and David Eagle will each be celebrating their 40th birthdays on tour!

Please note: the band will play 2 sets of approximately 45 minutes with an interval inbetween.

Herman Dune, the most Californian of French songwr Herman Dune, the most Californian of French songwriters and a defining figure of anti-folk, presents Odysseús, a musical journey through his tumultuous life...

Herman Dune @hermandune + special guests play @komedia_brighton on Tuesday 21st October.

Founded in the late 1990s, Herman Dune is the project of Franco-Swedish artist David Ivar. Drawing from folk influences (Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen), country (Townes Van Zandt, John Prine), and indie-folk (Elliot Smith, Lucinda Williams, Silver Jews), David Ivar, born and raised in Paris, had to create his own scene to express himself at a time when singing in English with an acoustic guitar on Parisian stages was considered absurd.

Since 2015, Herman Dune has been based in San Pedro, the working-class, port district of Los Angeles - a mecca of Californian punk rock (Minute Men, Black Flag) - with his wife and collaborator Mayon, and their three black cats. From his California bungalow, he runs his own label (Santa Cruz Records), has released six albums, out of a total of fifteen( Sweet Thursday, Santa Cruz Gold, Notes From Vinegar Hill, and the trilogy The Portable Herman Dune Vol. 1-3), and has composed several film scores, including Mariage à Mendoza and Pétaouchnock (both by Edouard Deluc).

Herman Dune, the most Californian of French songwriters and a defining figure of anti-folk, presents Odysseús, a musical journey through his tumultuous life, set for release on June 13th, via Santa Cruz Records.

In response to the recent developments of Covid-19

Dear Melting Vinyl supporters,

At present we are in the process of finding out what the effect of the UK Government’s latest advice to the public to avoid contact in social spaces means in terms of our upcoming events.

It may mean some shows planned for the near future could be postponed to a later date in order to safeguard our local community.

Melting Vinyl are dedicated to supporting artists and the local live music venues and we are currently in close communication with both – we will keep you all updated as soon as any news comes in on our social media.

Many thanks for your patience and understanding and please bear with us as we navigate through this unprecedented time.

All the best,

Anna & The Team
